These challenges were particularly difficult for the defense team because British libel laws assume that accusers/plaintiffs in these cases are acting in good faith, which in turn essentially throws the burden of proof on the defense instead of the plaintiff. Lipstadt and her publisher, Penguin Books UK, enlisted Evans’s help in determining whether or not Lipstadt’s claims about Irving were true and, if so, how Irving manipulated the historical record to exonerate Adolf Hitler and minimize the horrors of the Holocaust. The suit was brought on by David Irving, a now-largely discredited “historian” of World War II and Nazi history who was accused by author Deborah Lipstadt of being a Holocaust denier in a book she wrote about the topic. The book is fantastic, a must-read for its discussions of Nazi history and the nature of historical research and interpretation.Įvans wrote the book after serving as chief historical adviser and witness for the defense team in a famous libel suit that took place in a British court in the late 1990s and early 2000s. Le Guin told the Guardian that JK Rowling “could have been more generous” in acknowledging the 1968 novel.) While there, his pride tempts him into the summoning of a “shadow”, a beast that he will try to escape for the rest of the novel, and which thing of darkness he will only overcome by acknowledging as his own. Ged is whisked away by a great mage, Ogion, and studies at a school for wizardry. One of her earliest works, this novel is set in the world of Earthsea, an archipelago of islands, and follows the coming of age of the young wizard, Ged, from the island of Gont. “From the towns in its high valleys and the ports on its dark narrow bays many a Gontishman has gone forth to serve the Lords of the Archipelago in their cities as wizard or mage, or, looking for adventure, to wander working magic from isle to isle of all Earthsea,” begins Ursula K Le Guin, in her ringingly clear register. 5/30/2023 0 Comments Stanley musialLouis Cardinals, from 1941 to 1944 and from 1946 to 1963, before becoming a first-ballot inductee into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1969. Near semester’s end in December 2004, four Kentucky college students - and one dropout - staged perhaps the most stunningly inept art heist in the history of art heists. 5/30/2023 0 Comments Sometimes Moments by Len WebsterWebster, Thank You for such an amazing and beautiful story of friendship, love, loss, forgiveness, living and loving again! Seeing Cooper's love for her was just breathtaking! Yes, they both had issues, especially Peyton, but Cooper accepts her and helps her to see that it's okay!Īnd, let me say, the words right before each chapter just had me sighing and swooning and falling more in love with Cooper. Getting to see how Cooper helped Peyton open up was just beautiful! I loved seeing their friendship blossom, and how Cooper helped her to see that it was possible for her to love again. It may feel like it's the same story as Sometimes Moments but it's not, believe me! It's so much more than I expected. We get a bit of what brought Cooper into Peyton's life, a bit of his family, but also the moment he knew Peyton was his forever. Not only was it amazingly beautiful, but it was also real, raw, emotional and so, so swoonworthy! Sometimes, Forever is told through Cooper Hepburn's POV “Lavender Boy” and how he met his “Sometimes Forever” Peyton Spencer. 5/30/2023 0 Comments The moon's a harsh mistress book(Truthfully he probably gets into it because he wants to “bundle” with Wyoming, and he knows the Prof.) He is a self-described apolitical, like, he tells us, most Loonies. Manuel isn’t actually all that interested in revolting, at least not at first. And along with an old exiled professor and a political firebrand from Hong Kong Luna called Wyoming, Mike and Manuel plan and launch a revolution against the Terran-controlled Lunar Authority that runs their lives. He’s also the only person, Loonie or Terran, who knows that the central lunar computer is sentient. He was born on Luna to transported parents. Manuel/Manny/Man O’Kelly-Davis is a computer repair technician. This is an idea that has been explored repeatedly since this novel was published, but those stories almost all owe a debt to this one. Robert Heinlein manages to take the idea of a penal colony on the moon and turn it into a romantic story of political revolution. The Moon is a Harsh Mistress is an emblem of political science fiction. It didn’t take me long to understand why this book received such acclaim and is still regarded as a classic. 5/29/2023 0 Comments 20000 leagues under the sea authorThis novel is one of several in his “Voyages Extraordinaires.” This was a series of novels he started in 1862 and included other classics like Journey to the Center of the Earth and Around the World in Eighty Days. Jules Verne was a French author and pioneer of the “adventure” genre. Jules Verne and Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea When/where written: Paris, France 1869-1870.Title: Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea.Key Facts about Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea This mysterious antagonist keeps the three central characters hostage aboard the submarine, unwilling to allow the secret of his existence and his vast creation to reach those he believes are trying to prosecute him and keep him from living his chosen way of life. Initially, under the impression that the animal they’re hunting is a giant narwhal, the Professor and his companions soon discover that it is, in fact, a huge submarine commanded by Captain Nemo. He has been tasked, along with others, to hunt this creature down and ensure that it does no further damage. There is a large creature, some suggest, that is attacking ships indiscriminately. When the novel begins, the main character and narrator, Professor Aronnax, describes a terrifying new occurrence in the world’s oceans. 5/29/2023 0 Comments The South by Adolph L. Reed Jr.Their contention is that one kind of claim to an identity at odds with culturally constructed understandings of the identity appropriate to one's biology is okay but that the other is not - that it's OK to feel like a woman when you don't have the body of a woman and to act like (and even get yourself the body of) a woman but that it's wrong to feel like a black person when you're actually white and that acting like you're black and doing your best to get yourself the body of a black person is just lying. The comparisons between Dolezal and Republican Jenner (I've decided to opt for that referent because it is an identity continuous between "Bruce" and "Caitlyn" and is moreover the one most meaningful to me) began almost instantly, particularly as a flood of mass-mediated Racial Voices who support the legitimacy of transgender identity objected strenuously to suggestions that Dolezal's representation, and apparent perception, of herself as black is similar to Bruce Jenner's perception of himself as actually Caitlyn. By far the most intellectually and politically interesting thing about the recent "expose" of Spokane, WA, NAACP activist Rachel Dolezal's racial status is the conundrum it has posed for racial identitarians who are also committed to defense of transgender identity. |
